KEY GENERATION Techniques

Secret Squirrel

"Clam Kit - Schlage" walks thru a detailed step-by-step using the Clam Kit to reproduce keys. Even experienced users of this tool will learn to improve their success with these tips.

"Clam Kit - Auto" shows a cast auto key and using the key (as-is) to open a vehicle. A pen-knife blade is used here as a tension wrench. A 'cast' key should NOT be used as a working key as it can easily break but, in an emergency, all it needs to do is hold the pins at the correct height.

"Key Photos" details options to generate a working key from a good photo and a free desktop tool called 'calipers'. This tool superimposes a pair of calipers on the monitor which can be calibrated, then used to make key cut measurements from a photo.

"3D Keys" illustrates the use of plastic keys printed with a 3D printer. 3dKeys is a VB program I developed for printing code keys, bump keys and key blanks for experimentation. It is an interface between several published key blank definitions and OpenSCAD, the open source CAD tool. 3DKeys source code is available on GitHub.
